All of us, at some point, were feeling exhausted after a tough day at work when we could barely lift our feet to walk and all we wanted to do was fall on our favourite couch or bed, get a warm cup of tea or a glass of cold water, keep legs straight and watch some TV shows without anyone disturbing us. Some of us wake up feeling like this. The exhaustion is real and back or knee pain or a headache doesn't help and the whole day may seem like the toughest quest. Science is moving forward and in the near future, we may feel less of this and more happiness to move without getting tired instantly while we're getting older. Getting older is now considered to be a disease and the World Health Organisation (WHO) added ageing to the International Classification of Diseases list back in 2018. (Shade C., 2020) Thanks to NMN and the science of anti-ageing that he promotes, we can prolong our lifespan and also improve the quality of life without diseases! NMN is known to play an essential role in energy metabolism. It is a key regulator of metabolism and aging.
It has been seen to increase energy production and metabolic fitness while protecting against age-related diseases like heart disease and diabetes. In this blog, we’ll discuss all things NMN: what it is, its benefits, side effects and dosage.
What Is NMN (Nicotinamide mononucleotide)?
It is thought that NMN supplement is only a chemical compound made by scientists to prolong life, however, NMN can naturally be found in such vegetables as avocados, broccoli, cabbage, edamame and cucumbers (ibid). The issue with Nicotinamide mononucleotide in vegetables and fruits is that it contains only a tiny amount of NMN and it's not enough for our bodies to feel a difference.
NMNsify NMN capsules are synthesized from vitamin B3 and while tested by a 3rd party Laboratory, are confirmed as a safe anti-ageing booster for anyone over 28. Studies with mice suggest that young mice are less responsive to this longevity booster than older ones, however, more clinical trials with humans are needed (ibid).
How Does Pure NMN Supplement Work?
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is an essential coenzyme in our metabolism. NAD+ can be found in all living cells on our planet and what's important to know is that NAD+ levels drop almost by half when we reach our 50s. Here comes the NMN. Once we use NMN capsules, they are absorbed and either converted to NR (nicotinamide riboside) or directly transported across the cell membranes and converted to NAD+ (ibid). This is where all the benefits start. NMN is great for DNA repair and DNA protection. Still, many contemplate, why people are choosing NMN instead of NR. The answer is that NMN is more similar to NAD+, it is more stable than NR, better absorbed and more clinical trials are done with pure NMN than NR.
Why Do We Need To Increase NAD+ Levels With Supplement NMN?
As we have mentioned before, while getting older, our NAD+ levels drop, but why do we need to increase them again? Before starting to use pure NMN, we must know what happens if we do not use them.
Shin-ichiro Imai one of the best-known MD, and PhD professors in ageing and longevity studies in mammals that Dr Sinclair often refers to 'has said that NMN may improve adult human metabolism, rendering it more like that of someone ten or twenty years younger' (ibid).
His words show that age-related drop in NAD+ could cause issues with metabolism, furthermore, the other article from 'The National Library of Medicine states that 'Decline in NAD+ availability and abnormal NAD+/NADH redox state are tightly linked to age-related metabolic diseases and neurodegenerative disorders (Zhu XH, Lu M., Lee BY, Ugurbil K., Chen W., 2015).
All this can suggest that if we don’t use NMN supplementation in later years, NAD+ levels drop our body gets weaker, and the metabolic rate gets lower. We start to gain more weight and with this our blood sugar and blood pressure increase causing more and more dangerous diseases.
NMN Supplement Benefits and Longevity
David Sinclair a Ph.D. scientist in Biology and Harvard University lecturer is probably the best-known longevity promoter. He has said that using NMN supplement with the correct diet has improved his life already and 'his blood markers, at nearly 60 years old, are closer to those of a 31-year-old' (Shade C., 2020). This clearly indicates, that increasing NAD+ can prevent many unwanted age-related symptoms because it helps with DNA repair.
Possible Supplement Benefits
- Endurance to your skeletal muscles
- Improved fitness levels
- Lower risk of heart diseases
- Improved insulin sensitivity
- Improved eye function
- Lower chances of age-related weight gain
- Could protect the nervous system
- Improve cognition
- Could help to fight obesity and metabolic disorders
It can also be a great ally in helping to reduce alzheimer’s disease side effects. Unfortunately, some of the benefits (ibid) still lack studies on humans (Wang et al., 2016), but NMN Supplement is getting more popular and more funding goes towards longevity.
NMN Supplement Side Effects
Some people report that using NMN in higher doses may make them feel nauseous, may cause diarrhoea or some tummy discomfort, or they may not sleep at night due to too much energy, however, human trials with up to 1200mg (Kim M, Seol J, Sato T, Fukamizu Y, Sakurai T, Okura T., 2022) have shown that it was safe and didn't cause any side effects. There are no known significant or dangerous side effects from 3rd Party tested and safe brands.
The biggest issue is with unsafe and untested NMN brands. They are usually cheaper in price, sadly, many of these brands offer either low quality or no NMN in the capsule at all. Please, be careful and choose only tested brands like NMNsify for your supplement needs. All our products have the highest quality on the market and every batch is tested by an independent 3rd Party Lab.
Does NMN Cause Cancer?
As we have mentioned before, NMN supplements do not have any significant negative side effects. Cancer is a very sensitive theme and we need to be sure that anything we take does not encourage the growth of cancer cells. In clinical trials with mice that had lung cancer a team of experienced Chinese scientist have revealed that NMN neither promote nor suppress cancer or other tumour growth (Pan F., Kang S., Zhao Y., Dai L., Shao Q., Yang Y., Chen Q., Zhu J., Cut L. 2020). This news is great and gives some assurance that NMN will not cause or increase the risk for such a seriously life-changing, challenging and unfortunately, in many cases deadly illness.
How Much NMN Supplement Should I Take?
David Sinclair's supplements list can be found on Google, he has reported on the Joe Rogan podcast, that he uses 700mg-1000mg NMN supplement daily (Rogan J., 2019)
This dosage is pretty high and we would suggest starting lower.
- For people from 28 to 35 years, NMN 500 mg capsule in the morning on an empty stomach would be the best choice and should offer enough benefits.
- From 36 to 55 years NMN 500 mg 2 capsules would be a great choice. Again, try to use it on an empty stomach for the best results.
- Over 56 we would suggest increasing your dosage to 1 - 2 mg daily or two- four NMN 500 mg capsules.
NMN Dosage Suggestion
These are only general suggestions for NMN supplements and if you feel that you need to lower or increase your dosage do it carefully and gradually as we have mentioned before, due to high energy levels you may not fall asleep easily. Do not forget to talk with your doctor as they know you well and could help you to decide the best dosage. This information is meant to help and add to your knowledge, not replace advice from your doctor and is not meant to cover all possible uses, precautions, interactions or adverse effects. This supplement is a great addition to healthy aging.
How to Take NMN Supplements?
This supplement is absorbed best if taken on an empty stomach. You can use water or any other drink that you like, but we would suggest avoiding coffee. As David Sinclair mentioned in a Joe Rogan podcast (ibid), he only drinks one cup of coffee in the morning and only drinks tea afterwards. NMN and coffee could be a bit too much if someone is more sensitive and may result in a slightly higher pulse than usual. Most people do not feel the difference, but anecdotal feedback may indicate such an effect. We would also suggest taking it as early as possible because some people have reported that if they take this longevity booster later in the day, they have too much energy and can’t get sleep as easily as they usually do.
How Long Does It Take For NMN to Start Working
NMN is absorbed within minutes and gets into your bloodstream in around 15-30 minutes (Mills K. F., Yoshida S., Stein L. R., Grozio A., Kubota S., Sasaki Y., Redpath P., Migaud M. E., Apte R. S., Uchida K., Yoshino J., Imai S. 2017), so you should feel the difference within your first use of NMN supplement. The longer you use it, the more different kinds of benefits you will notice. If you do not feel the difference, try adjusting the dosage first by increasing it. Do not trust companies who advertise that you should feel the difference only after 1-2 weeks. NMN energy boost should be felt from day 1 if the dosage is right for you.
NMN Boosts Energy Metabolism
NMN supplement is a great way to boost energy metabolism and increase cellular function. NMN, or nicotinamide mononucleotide, is a molecule that plays a key role in energy metabolism. It works by increasing the levels of NAD+ in the body, which is an important coenzyme involved in cellular energy production. By boosting NAD+ levels, NMN can improve mitochondrial function and enhance metabolism, leading to increased energy levels and improved overall health. In addition, NMN has been shown to have anti-aging effects and may help protect against age-related metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity.
Conclusion
NMN is considered a safe supplement that does not have significantly dangerous side effects. We do need more clinical trials with humans to know more details and what other benefits it has to offer, but so far NMN has brought new colours and more energy to numerous lives. Ageing can be challenging, but now we have a chance to make a difference and to live longer without limitations.
In short, NMN is a promising anti-aging strategy that deserves your attention. It might not be the fountain of youth, but it can help you age gracefully and improve your general health in the process. The benefits of NMN supplementation include better sleep, reduced oxidative stress, improved metabolism, and enhanced fat metabolism. Be sure to consult your doctor before starting a new supplement. They can tell you if you’re healthy enough to start taking it or if there are any possible interactions with other medications or supplements you’re taking.

Hi there Margaret,
There are no studies or scientific proof of long-term NMN usage. The ones that were done for 12 weeks showed a lot of potential and benefits of NMN to our bodies. So far it hasn’t shown addictive tendencies, but it is not yet guaranteed by clinical trials. You can find a lot of anecdotal sources on the internet where people used it for more than a year and had no issues with it. If you are worried about dependency, you may try to use it for 12 weeks and give it a break after to see how you actually feel. This period of time is considered safe by research. To stay on the safe side discuss this with your doctor as they know best and can give you the best opinion.
